ICA WORLD CUP 2022 : GROUP G

icaworldcup

Are you ready for another week of dilemmas, trying to come up with your favourite eight?  Seventeen to narrow it down from….

Carter USM – Rubbish (ICA 229)

The Cure – Just Like Heaven (ICA 157)

The Delgados – Under Canvas, Under Wraps (ICA 181)

Fucked Up – Talking Pictures (ICA 226)

Goldfrapp – Twist [Schaffhäuser & Wessling Mix] (ICA 203)

Human League – The Things That Dreams Are Made Of (ICA 228)

Malcolm Middleton – Loneliness Shines (ICA 188)

Mark Lanegan – Winter Song* (ICA 307)

Minutemen – Corona (ICA 170)

Mogwai – Helicon 1 (ICA 166)

Orange Juice – Rip It Up (12″ version) (ICA 219)

Paul Haig – Heaven Sent (ICA 276)

Soft Cell – Memorabilia (edit) (ICA 156)

Suede – Animal Nitrate (ICA 209)

Talulah Gosh – Don’t Go Away** (ICA 153)

Trashcan Sinatras – All The Dark Horses (ICA 186)

Neil Young – Powderfinger (ICA 311)

*a song by Screaming Trees – ICA 307 was a compilation of tracks on which Mark Lanegan sang and played

**Talulah Gosh was used as the opening track on the Amelia Fletcher ICA a couple of weeks back, and as such track #6 on this ICA (the opening track on the b-side) has to come in as substitute.

This is a really intriguing group.  I’m genuinely hard pushed to pick out eight favourites, and I’m 100% certain that, if I was taking part in the voting process (which I most definitely am not!!!!), I wouldn’t be choosing all six of my own ICAs.

As usual, voting closes at midnight (UK time) next Saturday, which is the 13th of August.

  11. Wow! This is a tough group, but I am shocked and grieved that the Trashcans are not getting much of the love so far…they should be blowout favourites…please give a second listen to that track, folks…it’s gorgeous!

  13. Hoping I’m not breaking any rules, but I’m going to cast my vote in two parts. Why? Because one song on this list is just so great, there is abso no way I am not voting for it, and it’s so significant to me that I just have to jump in right away and cast a vote for it. And maybe, just maybe, those who’ve already voted and didn’t choose eight already will give the song a listen. And add it to their list.

A preamble to my vote. Shortly before my good friend Wally Brooks’ 22nd birthday, I borrowed an album of his, “Rust Never Sleeps.” Shortly after his 22nd birthday, he was killed in a motorcycle accident. Four days ago was the fortieth anniversary of his death. I never had the chance to return that album, and it remains in my collection to this day. This particular song, showing up at this particular time seems…significant. I really hope Neil passes on to the next round because, based on the strength of this song, he deserves to.

With that, I cast my first vote for…

    Neil Young – Powderfinger

The balance of my seven will follow.

  14. The Cure (by a whisker… any song after this one would have gotten them the axe)
    The Delgados
    Human League
    Minutemen
    Orange Juice
    Paul Haig
    Soft Cell
    Talulah Gosh

  24. I’m back with my final seven, and I’ll say… That first vote cast earlier for Neil Young and Crazy Horse(and thanks for the condolences, it’s surprising how 40 years can go by and it’s still fresh as) was a no brainer. 2 more I picked out, no prob. then 2 more after that, with a bit more difficulty. 2 I tossed into the rubbish bin pretty quickly, 2 more a bit more reluctantly, but they just didn’t measure up to the rest. That left me with 3 slots to fill, and eight pretty decent songs to choose from. F*cked Up and Minutemen, intriguing, would like to hear more, Suede, has a good emotional punch, Tallulah Gosh, has an early OJ.Josef K sound with a female vocalist, The Cure, The Human League, Paul Haig, Soft Cell. How do I get 3 picks out of those, when all those tracks have something to recommend them? Well, eight songs, and I have an eight-sided die handy…which shall I remove? Two rolls, and there goes Paul Haig and Soft Cell. Okay with that, both tunes had decent lyrics, but the music was a bit tedious. Switching over to a six-sided die, and we lose F*cked Up and Tallullah Gosh. Now down to that four-sided die to knock out the last one, and it’s The Cure. I almost make an exception because I liked this one so much…but a process is a process, and I now have my last three.
    This makes my final seven;

    MinuteMen
    Human League
    Suede
    Malcolm Middleton
    Carter the Unstoppable
    Orange Juice
    Screaming Trees

  25. The Cure
    The Delgados
    Malky Middleton
    Mark Lanegan (surprise vote!)
    Orange Juice
    Suede
    Trashcan Sinatras
    Neil Young
