The running commentaries this week have been a scream.  I’m going to compile the best of them (and sadly there isn’t room for everything) into a short report on Saturday morning.

Leonard Cohen 4 v Echo and The Bunnymen 27

(all as at 1.30pm on Tuesday 6 February – I’m out doing my matchday announcer at Raith Rovers in the evening and unable to keep up with blog stuff).

Fair to say that there’s a couple of unexpected shock results in the offing while others are far too tight to call.  Special mention to Teenage Fanclub who were 6-1 down early on but have gradually pulled things back in what is proving to be a compelling contest.

Click here for a reminder of what the full list of songs are. Deadline is Friday midnight.

  1. If Super Furry Animals lose to OMD then I am throwing all my toys out of the pram at once. Not only would that be an utter travesty, but it will severely diminish the faith I have in this blog’s readership. Come on guys – you know it makes sense! Welsh psychedelia beats bland synthpop hands down every time, doesn’t it?

  2. It’s a game of two halves Robster
Can they cut it on a wet Tuesday night in the Wirral?

  3. I’m willing to have a small bet those three votes against the Clash came in from George in disguise … and if Coldplay win against the mighty Cobras in the end, I’ll consult my lawyer!

Sorry for Weatherall though, Adam. I can imagine you’re not really pleased with the result …

  4. That would be incorrect, JC, as everyone does in fact like The Clash. Everyone LOVES The Clash, and rightly so. (It’s Clash day here in the US as a matter of fact.) And I’m with Dirk about the Cobras, too. Coldplay is sort of a soundtrack people use to convince people that they’re sensitive.

  5. Good to see that a couple of minnows have made it to the next round with a couple of giants felled

  6. The Clash – they’ll be wishing they’d kept this performance for the final.
    Martin Stephenson
Marr/Girls Aloud – Rod was never going to win, but genuinely liked the GA song
    ADF edge it
Beta Band for auld time’s sake
    The Bully Wee
Grandaddy after a very keenly contested battle that could’ve swung either way
SFA after a dour game that seemed to be heading for a replay
Cave – the Bellshill Beatles couldn’t get the ball off of him in this one
Stranglers – arrrghh this was difficult, but Frame’s midfield artistry undone by Trotsky’s devastating wing play on the left.
Pixies – never any chance of an upset here
    Roses – swaggering through unopposed
Lucksmiths – contrasting styles with the Aussies winning through, result may have been different if fixture had been played at 2am.
    Trashcan Sinatras
    Detroit Cobras
    Bunnymen – sorry Lenny

  7. i just noticed the Lucksmiths are losing out to Daft Punk. This is wrong. I don’t know if Daft Punk scored from a dodgy penalty or something but I think we need some virtual assistance here. The three of us here all vote for Lucksmiths. That should swing it
