ICA WORLD CUP 2022 : GROUP D

icaworldcup

As mentioned before, all the postings for the initial Group stages were readied, typed up, and posted at the same time, weeks in advance.  My great fear was that folk wouldn’t respond well to it, and with the traffic to TVV being well under half of what it was back in 2018 the last time an ICA World Cup was held, I anticipated that voter turnout would be low.  I’ve been very pleasantly surprised with the responses and the results of Group C, from the ICAs provided by Hybrid Social Professor, will be revealed tomorrow.

This week, seventeen songs are competing for your votes, with eight of them set to qualify for the knock-out stages.  As ever, all the songs, are #1 from all the relevant ICAs, and they are offered up in alphabetical order of the singer or group involved.  Some of the ICAs are the work of yours truly, while others came from guest contributors.

Ballboy – Avant Garde Music (ICA 175)

The Beatles – Tomorrow Never Knows (ICA 244)

Blancmange – Distant Storm (ICA 251)

The Blue Nile – A Walk Across The Rooftops (ICA 304)

Cinerama – Maniac (ICA 296)

Edwyn Collins – 50 Shades of Blue (ICA 298)

Echo and The Bunnymen – Rescue (ICA 225)

Gregory Isaacs – Love Is Overdue (ICA 194)

Jens Lekman – Maple Leaves (ICA 184)

John McGeoch – Shot By Both Sides* (ICA 259)

Muse – Uprising (ICA 167)

Pink Cross – Dinahmite (ICA 297)

Pop Will Eat Itself – Def Con One (ICA 234)

Pylon – Cool (ICA 282)

The Ramones – Beat On The Brat (ICA 185)

Sons and Daughters – Johnny Cash (ICA 199)

The Wave Pictures – Stay Here and Take Care of the Chickens (ICA 201)

*a song by Magazine – ICA 259 was a compilation of tracks on which the guitarist played

Good luck working your way through today’s choices, as there’s a few tough decisions to take to get the number down to the eight you want to go through.

As usual, voting closes at midnight (UK time) next Saturday, which is the 6th of August.

  15. I can’t believe I’m leaving out The Beatles & Ramones and really wish I could have found a place for Jens Lekman and Sons & Daughters, but I couldn’t have removed any of the remaining 8 below. This was a really tough group…though I think I said that last week…and the week before that…and the week before that.

Blancmange – Distant Storm (ICA 251)
    Cinerama – Maniac (ICA 296)
Edwyn Collins – 50 Shades of Blue (ICA 298)
Echo & The Bunnymen – Rescue (ICA 225)

Pop Will Eat Itself – Def Con One (ICA 234)
    Pylon – Cool (ICA 282)

Can I say that each of the weekly Groups themselves have made excellent playlists in their own right? This week no exception.

  16. The Beatles – Tomorrow Never Knows
The Blue Nile – A Walk Across The Rooftops
Echo and The Bunnymen – Rescue
John McGeoch – Shot By Both Sides*

  17. The Beatles
    Pylon
    Cinerama
    Ballboy
    Jens Lekman
    Edwyn Collins
    Sons and Daughters

“Tomorrow never knows” and “Cool” are outstanding. Surprisingly, Pylon will not qualify for the next round.

    Greetings

    Echo and the Bunnymen
    Cinerama
    Edwyn Collins
    John McGeoch
    Ramones

    Blancmange
    Blue Nile
    PWEI
    Beatles
    Ramones
    Bunnymen
    Pylon
    Edwyn Collins

And the rest are all a close tie at the end…

  20. Go Lionesses…A brilliant performance…Champions of Europe.

  24. Late to the party, but I have a question… if e.g. Ballboy “Avant Garde Music” qualifies this week, will we be seeing this same song in the next round, or a different track from ICA 175? Are we voting for the song or the artist (or the ICA)?

  25. Hi there Curious.

    Great questions.

Once a song has been used in the qualifying round, it won’t appear again in the knockout stages. Similarly, if a song from another part of the ICA is used in the Round of 64, it can’t be used in any subsequent rounds.

Most of the ICAs have ten songs. To reach the final, six of these will require to have been used (Qualifying plus Rounds of 64, 32, 16, 8 and the semi-finals). The singer/band in question will be represented in the final by one of whatever songs hasn’t been ‘fielded’ already.

My own view as organiser is that everyone is being asked to vote on the song, but in all hoesty, there’s no hard or fast rule about it. I’m just delighted folk are getting on board.

  26. The Beatles – Tomorrow Never Knows (ICA 244)
Blancmange – Distant Storm (ICA 251)
Echo and The Bunnymen – Rescue (ICA 225)
Gregory Isaacs – Love Is Overdue (ICA 194)
    Muse – Uprising (ICA 167)
Pop Will Eat Itself – Def Con One (ICA 234)
    Pylon – Cool (ICA 282)
The Ramones – Beat On The Brat (ICA 185)

  27. Ballboy
    Blue Nile
    Cinerama
    Edwyn Collins
    Echo and the Bunnymen
    Gregory Isaacs
    John McGeogh
    Ramones

  28. First choices simple:
    The Ramones
    Ballboy
    Cinerama
    Echo and the Bunnymen
    John McGeoch
    The Blue Nile

    Then:
    Pylon
    And a late charge by…
    Sons and Daughters.
This wasn;t too tricky for me… but at makes the second round look incredibly strong.

  29. Thanks for the explanation JC. Here are my votes, although I confess I’m thinking also about other songs on some of these ICAs that I’d love to see come up in another round… Thanks for organizing this!

Ballboy – Avant Garde Music (ICA 175)
    Cinerama – Maniac (ICA 296)
Echo and The Bunnymen – Rescue (ICA 225)
Gregory Isaacs – Love Is Overdue (ICA 194)
John McGeoch – Shot By Both Sides* (ICA 259)
    Muse – Uprising (ICA 167)
Pop Will Eat Itself – Def Con One (ICA 234)
Sons and Daughters – Johnny Cash (ICA 199)

  30. Fucking hell- 42 comments. This seems to be a tournament whose time has come eh?

My vote, not too late I hope

    The Beatles
    Edwyn
    Echo and the Bunnymen
    PWEI
    Gregory Isaacs
    Ramones
    Sons and Daughters

  31. To be fair, Adam…..a couple of comments were questions and replies, but it is still an astounding turn out this week.

Your vote is in well time….the polls close each Saturday at midnight.

  32. Ballboy
    Beatles
    Blue Nile
    Jens Lekman
    Sons and Daughters
    John McGeoch
    Ramones
    Wave Pictures

  33. Yeah, this was a tuff’un. A batch of good songs overall. A couple I knew from the get-go, but those remaining 6…
Some like the Beatles, I had to knock out because they are just too popular, seemed too easy a vote…maybe not avante garde enough?
Others good, but just didn’t grab me on first listenings…maybe they can become favorites on repeated listens.
    So, here’s my picks;
    Ballboy
    Edwyn Collins
    Muse
    Pop Will Eat Itself
    Ramones
    Sons and Daughters
    The Wave Pictures
    Pink Kross

  34. Here’s my choice . Thanks!!

Ballboy – Avant Garde Music (ICA 175)

John McGeoch – Shot By Both Sides* (ICA 259)

    Pylon – Cool (ICA 282)
Sons and Daughters – Johnny Cash (ICA 199)
