I’ll begin with an apology.

Sometime towards the end of last year, one of you kind readers dropped me an e-mail in which reference was made to the rare art of the 10″ single.  I’ve misplaced the e-mail (probably deleted it in error if the truth be told) and so I’m unable to give you the credit for inspiring what will be an occasional series – but please feel free to identify yourself in the comments so that I can turn sorry into thank you.

I only have eighteen bits of vinyl that are 10″ in size, with the majority being singles/EPs. I’ll try to get them all on the blog over the course of time, but for now here’s the list:-

Adult Net – Where Were You?
Aloha Hawaii – Towns On The Moon/I’ve Been Bad For Years and Years
Arctic Monkeys – Brianstorm
Arctic Monkeys – My Propeller
Arctic Monkeys – Don’t Sit Down Cos I’ve Moved Your Chair
Aztec Camera – The Crying Scene
Breeders – Head To Toe
Curve – Clipped
Dave House/Jenny Owen Youngs – Split EP
Gil Scott-Heron – Winter In America
Joe Jackson – One More Time
Lemonheads – Confetti/My Drug Buddy
Madder Rose – Car Song
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Bring It On
OMD – Messages
Sultans Of Ping FC – Where’s Me Jumper
Tom Robinson – Still Loving You
The Wedding Present ‎– Ukrainski Vistupi V Johna Peela / Українські Виступи В Івана Піла

First one to feature is this 2003 single, an edited version of a track on the mostly underwhelming LP Nocturama

mp3 : Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Bring It On

Bring It On features a co-vocal from Chris Bailey whose most famous song is this punky effort from 1977:-

mp3 : The Saints – (I’m) Stranded

The two b-sides are typical of the sort of ballads and slower-tempo numbers the band was mostly churning out at the time. It was a period of real transition as the sound became ever more reliant on Nick Cave‘s piano/organ playing and the violin contributions from Warren Ellis. It’s not the most fondly remembered period in the band’s long and illustrious history.

mp3 : Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Shoot Me Down
mp3 : Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Swing Low

  1. Ha! Very excited to see this turn into a piece, or hopefully an ongoing piece! It was, I believe, me who begged for you to draw the curtain back and reveal your 10″ collection-I had alluded to it also in the end of the OMD ICA I passed along. No thanks expected though…my shameless curiosity was just wanting its satisfaction. By the way, your kind words about my two ICA’s has encouraged me to start drafting another contribution for you to consider…not an ICA in fact but something a little different…hope that’s not too presumptuous!

  2. While I agree that ‘Nocturama’ isn’t right up there with the Bad Seeds best work, there’s no denying it does have some cracking moments. A couple of them will be included in a forthcoming series I have lined up.

Anyway, I’m glad everyone finally gets to see JC’s ten inches…

  3. Feels a bit like Carry On Villain on here this morning. Ooh matron etc.
I have the Sultans of Ping one and the Curve one. Great idea. Can readers post their favourite 10 inchers as well.

  4. I’ve only got two (oh’er missus) which have both featured on CCM
Big Decision by That Petrol Emotion and Night Nurse by Gregory Isaac

  5. Thank you Rhetor. I hope the revelations of the extent and quality of my ten inchers hasn’t disappointed you….(ooh matron etc)

  6. I hjave a fair few knocking about in my collection including 4 from your list JC 9OMD / Aztec Camera / Madder Rose & Lemonheads)

Off the top of my head I also have OMD’s Souvenir, Aztec Camera’s Somewhere In My Heart, The Motors’ Love & Loneliness, Dollar’s Hand Held in Black & White & Orange Juice’s Two Hearts Together…

    Cheers rhetor / JC

  7. I think I’ve got a couple of On-U Sound 10″ dubplates, plus singles by Aztec Camera, Lemonheads, Gregory Isaacs and ‘The Children of Rarn Suite’, a posthumous release by Marc Bolan.
I haven’t played anything from this period of Nick Cave’s career for a long while – these tunes sound very good to these ears.

  8. I’ve got quite a few 10″ including a few album boxsets that for some reason were released on 10″. The best of the bunch has to be My Favourite Girl, not only is the song beautiful but so is the packaging. So good I bought it twice.

  9. My favorite 10″ has to be my copy of Black Market Clash. But I have a Fall 10″ which includes Leave The Capitol and Slates among it’s treasure. New Musik, Nina Hagan, Lene Lovich, and Cheap Trick, along with The Clash were released as “Nu-Disks” in the early 80s and I of course collected them. I have a Pet Shop Boys 10″ of alternative mixes of It’s Alright and that Aztec Camera 10″ as well. That Motors 10″ of Love And Loneliness is brilliant – I got my hands on the Orange version about 20 years ago to go along with the Yellow one I got back when it came out.
