The foursome pictured above are The Pale Fountains.
From Liverpool – but not your quintessential Liverpool band. Which is maybe why I never really warmed to them. I was more of a Bunnymen, Teardrop Explodes, Wah! and whatever-Bill Drummond– was-involved- in fan, rather than this lot who I felt were a bit too much like Radio 2 or Eurovision Song Contest for my liking.
But they have many devotees out there, including Jacques The Kipper who is the first visitor to make a request. And it was anything by The Pale Fountains.
So here’s the song that got them nearest to chart success. A #48 smash from 1982.
Thank You – The Pale Fountains (mp3)*
The Pale Fountains released a handful of single and two albums on Virgin Records in between 1982 and 1985. After their demise, vocalist and chief songwriter – Michael Head – formed Shack. Another member of the band was Andy Diagram, who later on joined James at the height of their fame and played on a couple of their albums.
I suppose on reflection, this was a band just a few years ahead of their time. On listening to them again, I can hear quite a bit of the sound that made The Divine Comedy so popular – critically and commercially.
