SATURDAY’S SCOTTISH SONG : #506: L- SPACE

This should have been part of the first alphabetical run through of the Scottish band/singers, but I mistakenly passed over L-space, an electronic band who were together from 2016 – 2020.  This is their story as written in their own words back in mid-2018:-

L-space are a noisy electro dream pop band from Scotland. We write music about a better future.

Gordon Johnstone and Lily Higham met in 2014 while working at a charity in Edinburgh. They bonded one day while they were both gluing their shoes back together. Times were tough. Wages were low. Shoes were inadequate. The conversation revolved around the many hearts of a cuttlefish, first through seventh world problems, and the practicalities of pig farming on Mars.

Gordon knew Dickson Telfer through his time as editor of The Grind. The Grind had organised Dickson’s book launch in Falkirk in late 2014 and the two stayed in touch through a mutual acquaintance. In May 2015 The Grind organised a show in Stirling which paired up musicians and spoken word artists. On the bill was a sort of proto-L-space with Gordon on piano and Lily on synth performing music for Dickson’s stories.

L-space began in earnest in late 2016 when Gordon and Lily decided to record an EP. Sol 0 was a collection of songs the two had written together over the previous few months. Dickson provided a bassline for Blue Flowers just before the EP’s release and saw the formation of the band. In early 2017 Lily met Maura Keane while working in a restaurant in Glasgow. A few months later, Maura joined on synth duties. Since then the band have released multiple singles, played at venues and festivals in Glasgow and Edinburgh, and continue to build on their momentum.

The band would then sign to Last Night From Glasgow, going on to release three albums, Kipple Arcadia (2018), Music For Megastructures (2019) and Feed The Engines (2020) along with one single and one EP.   There’s been nothing since 2020, and I am guessing that they were yet another group of young musicians whose hopes, dreams and aspirations were brought to a grinding halt with the onset of the COVID restrictions which brought a halt to recording and touring activities.
