THE TESTIMONIAL TOUR OF 45s (aka The Singular Adventures of Edwyn Collins)

AED Records had been established in late 2011 by Edwyn and James Endeacott. The AED was short for ‘Analogue Enhanced Digital’ with the aim of releasing music recorded at Edwyn’s West Heath Yard studio in London by bands that were otherwise unsigned.  Here’s a list of the initial releases:-

2011

Broken Hands – Brother (7″ single) : AED 0001
Rotifer – Canvey Island (7″ Single) : AED 0002
Wide Sea – A Place To Call Home (7″ single) : AED 0003
Linden – Brown Bird Singing/If I Had Wings (7″ single) : AED 0004
Various – Today’s Technology Today (box set of the first four singles on the label) : AED 0005
Wide Sea – A Place To Call Home (album on CD) : AED 0006
Rotifer – The Hosting Couple (album on CD and vinyl) : AED 0007

2012

Dead Flamingos – Habit (EP on CD and vinyl) : AED 0008
Linden – Bleached Highlights (album on CD, vinyl and as a promo) : AED 0009
Colorama – Good Music (album on CD, vinyl and as a promo) AED 0010
Filthy Boy – Naughty Corner (7″ single) AED 0011

But of interest to this series is a release for Record Store Day on 21 April 2012.

#35: Tape Box : Edwyn Collins (AED Records, AEDEC15, 2012)

First up, I don’t have a copy of this.  I’ve long been against getting sucked into the Record Store day shenanigans, and I wasn’t going to make an exception in this case.  The cost of the box set was £16.99, and it contained 6 x 7″ singles, five of which contained previously released material from between 1989 and 2001. The sixth single was a preview of a song that was due to be included on his next album, which at the time was scheduled for release later in 2012, but ended up being delayed until March 2013. There was also a poster inside the box, comprising 192 photos and images.

Only 500 copies were made.  The asking price for a mint copy, available in the UK via Discogs, is £80 plus postage and packaging.  I won’t be tempted…….

The song that was on the sixth 7″ record?

mp3 : Edwyn Collins – Down The Line

It would become Track 7 on the next album, Understated, which was another release on AED Records, and one I’ll return to again in due course.

The b-side was what was detailed as ‘a special demo version, the first time Edwyn worked the song out, with his son Will, on vocals and the two of them playing one guitar. Edwyn shapes the chords, Will strums. Too good not to share’.

I’ve long hoped this demo version would turn up in some shape or form in later years, but fourteen years on, still no joy.
