SATURDAY’S SCOTTISH SONG : #500: THE KUNDALINI GENIE

It’s no exaggeration to say that this ongoing series in which any Scottish singer or band who has at least one song sitting on the hard drive of my laptop would not have reached #500 (with quite a few more still to come), without me being a supporter of the label, Last Night From Glasgow, and therefore eligible to be given copies of albums that I otherwise would unlikely be aware of.

It was back in November 2023 that False Highs, True Lows by The Kundalini Genie was included among the latest batch of records that were covered by my membership.  The name of the band meant nothing to me, so I was surprised to learn that:-

(a) they were from Glasgow; and

(b) this was in fact their sixth LP, albeit their first for LNFG, with the others being self-released or having been issued with the support of labels in Vienna and Portland, Oregon.

The fact that the band’s music has been described as ‘neo-psychedelia band with Beach Boys-esque harmonic vocal symphonies on layers of dreamy fuzz guitar and synths’ is maybe an indication why they never appeared on my radar.

The membership of the band appears to have changed a few times over the years, but those involved with the 2023 album were Liam Cole (drums), Samuel Floyd (bass/vocals), Isaac Barnes (bass/guitars), Sarah Embleton (vocals/keys) and Robbie Wilson (vocals/guitars/bass/keys/percussion), with the songs being written by Wilson & Embleton.

The album has a number of decent moments on it, but just not enough to make me want to delve into the back catalogue.
