ICA WORLD CUP 2022 : ROUND ONE OF THE KNOCKOUT STAGE (vii)

icaworldcup

Last week’s games were closer than most of the other ties thus far in Round 2, and indeed the match up between Caerphilly and Cincinatti swung one way and the another before the eventual winners picked up six successive late votes to prevent any penalty shoot-out.

Match 21 : Suede 25 Scritti Politti 14

Match 22 : Manic Street Preachers 18 The National 23

Match 23 : Siouxsie & The Banshees 23 Amelia Fletcher 14

Match 24: Lloyd Cole 25 v The Delgados 16

If I had been involved in voting last week, I’d have suffered three disappointments.  But hey, it’s a democracy…..for the time being!

I reckon if the bookmakers were to take a look at this week’s match-ups that some teams would be installed as odds-on favourites…….but who knows?

The Sweet (1st in Group F) v Chumbawamba (8th in Group E)

mp3: The Sweet – Ballroom Blitz v mp3 : Chumbawamba – Love Can Knock You Over

The Triffids (4th in Group H) v Soft Cell (5th in Group G)

mp3: The Triffids – Beautiful Waste v mp3 : Soft Cell – Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go?

Orange Juice (2nd in Group G) v Bauhaus (7th in Group F)

mp3: Orange Juice – Holiday Hymn v mp3: Bauhaus – Kick In The Eye

Comsat Angels (3rd in Group E) v The Breeders (6th in Group H)

mp3: Comsat Angels – You Move Me v mp3: The Breeders – Safari

As ever, thanks for taking part.  Voting closes at midnight (UK time) next Friday, which is the 21st of October.

For anyone wanting a break from all things World Cup-related, please feel free to take a trip to No Badger Required, where I’ve penned a guest posting for SWC offering up a nostalgic assessment of Easy Pieces, the 1985 album from Lloyd Cole & The Commotions.  Just click here.

  1. 1.Bloody love Oompaloompa (& on basis of votes already cast will be sorry to see them out) but on basis of song strength it has to be The Sweet.
    2.Soft Cell.
    3.Bauhaus.
4.Cannot decide – streaker on pitch, game abandoned.

  2. Are you ready Steve? Uh-huh
    Andy? Yeah
    Mick? Okay
    Alright fellas, let’s go!

Chumbawamba (Damn! Ok, Brian. Let’s go)
    The Triffids
    Orange Juice
    The Breeders

  3. Didn’t watch the first game.
Soft Cell for the win. Feel bad for the Triffids but it has to be Soft Cell on the basis of the song.
Bauhaus squeeze past Orange Juice- not Edwyn’s finest performance for me.
    Breeders.

  4. Coming in a little early this go-round.
I was on the winning side of three this week, all except for the one I was really rooting for. I can only guess the Banshees are getting lucky calls from the referees, because they are sure not outplaying their competition.
    For this week;

    The Sweet v Chumbawamba
Plenty of songs by the Chumbas would have taken this match, but this one, sadly, was not it. Workmanlike effort, but not enough to get over on a song that’s just hitting on all cylinders.

    The Sweet

    The Triffids v Soft Cell
Soft Cell off to a strong start, and if they hadn’t started wanking about and trying to show off, they would have taken it. But brevity is the soul of wit, and also a powerful song. While they are mucking about and bringing in trick plays and showing off, The Triffids are scoring goal after goal and showing their mastery of knowing how to build into a great song and more importantly, when to cut it short without becoming tedious and pretentious.

    The Triffids

    Orange Juice v Bauhaus
This’un had me worried. Favourite OJ not bringing in a strong entry, going for the nostalgia of a pedigreed but nondescript song. Fortunately the entry by Bauhaus is just as generic. Both have a nice upbeat character, in the end the repetitiveness of Bauhaus does it in.

    Orange Juice.

    Comsat Angels v The Breeders
The Breeders come in with a pedestrian and droning effort. Might do for seasonal play, but not for the playoffs.

    Comsat Angels.

  5. As I feared, the Manics failed to progress. Rather like Wales will hopefully manage at the genuine (?) world cup, they managed to get through the group stage but then fell at the first knockout stage. But losing to The National? That feels like being knocked out by the minnows of Ecuador rather the might of Senegal!! Shocker.
At least the Banshees continue marching on.

    As for this week’s matches,
    The Sweet
    Soft Cell
    draw
    Comsat Angels

  6. 1) The Sweet – Ballroom Blitz
    2) Soft Cell – Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go?
    3) Bauhaus – Kick In The Eye
    4) The Breeders – Safari

  7. Chumbawamba – Love Can Knock You Over
Soft Cell – Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go?
Bauhaus – Kick In The Eye
    The Breeders – Safari

    Thanks!

  8. Chumbawamba (surprisingly!)
    Triffids
Orange Juice (disputed penalty sends them through)
    Comsat Angels
